JAKARTA (JP): Around 250 workers of a privately-owned paper mill in Tangerang, 30 kilometers west of here, went on strike on Friday to demand a hike in their meal and transportation allowances.

The disgruntled laborers gathered out front of PT Nirmala Dia Inti at 7 a.m. and disobeyed the working siren.

According to the workers, they receive only Rp 5,000 (US$2.25) a month for meals and Rp 5,000 a month for transportation.

"We're only get Rp 150 a day for our meals," said a protester who has worked three years at the factory.

The workers demanded a total of Rp 1,600 a day for meals and transportation.
