Papaya Plant Holds Abundant Benefits from Fruit to Root
Papaya is not merely a sweet fruit easily found in markets or growing abundantly in the yards of Indonesian homes. The plant, scientifically known as Carica papaya, turns out to hold a wealth of bioactive compounds distributed across nearly all of its parts. From the fruit, leaves, seeds, skin, stem, to its roots, every element of this plant has become an intriguing subject of research in the world of science.
Two in-depth studies published through the scientific journal platform ScienceDirect reveal that the papaya plant possesses a highly complex nutritional and phytochemical profile. This makes it valuable not only as a functional food ingredient but also as a potential source of compounds that could be developed in the field of future healthcare.
The most commonly consumed part is, of course, the fruit. Besides its soft texture and refreshingly sweet taste, papaya fruit is a storehouse of essential nutrients. Its main contents include vitamin A, vitamin C, minerals, fibre, and various antioxidant compounds needed by the body to ward off free radicals.
In a study published in the journal Pharmacological Research - Modern Chinese Medicine, researchers highlighted the nutritional and phytochemical composition of papaya fruit that provides various biological benefits. However, it is important for consumers to understand the boundary between nutrition and medical treatment. Although excellent for a healthy diet, the benefits of papaya fruit as a food must still be distinguished from medical claims suggesting that the fruit can instantly cure certain diseases.
Papaya leaves are often avoided due to their bitter taste, yet behind that bitterness lies great potential. A review titled “Nutraceutical Value of Carica papaya: A Review” available on ScienceDirect shows that papaya leaves contain various essential phytochemical compounds.
A number of laboratory studies have found potential antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity in papaya leaf extracts. Nevertheless, these findings still require further validation. Most of the current evidence still comes from experimental models, so the use of papaya leaves cannot automatically replace the role of conventional medical drugs.
When splitting open a papaya, the small black seeds inside are usually immediately thrown into the bin. Yet this part contains chemical components that are highly interesting to scientists. According to a study in the journal Scientific African, papaya seeds are rich in protein, fibre, lipids, and minerals.
Furthermore, oil extracted from papaya seeds contains healthy fatty acids, including oleic acid. This opens up opportunities for the utilisation of papaya seeds as a source of new bioactive compounds in the future, rather than merely ending up as organic waste.
Research on Carica papaya does not stop at the parts commonly eaten. Data from ScienceDirect note that the skin, stem, and even roots of papaya also contain compounds with biological potential. In traditional practice, these parts have indeed long been used for various herbal purposes.
