515,000 viewers in 35 days mark regional milestone

Malaysia’s animation industry scored a major regional win as Papa Zola The Movie emerged as the top-performing Malaysian film in Indonesia, signaling growing cross-border appeal for Southeast Asian content.

515,000 Viewers in Indonesia

Papa Zola The Movie drew 515,000 viewers during its 35-day theatrical run in Indonesia, making it the highest-grossing Malaysian film in the country. According to Monsta, the achievement also placed the film among Indonesia’s top three highest-grossing films in early 2026.

The company described the reception as proof that strong storytelling and universal themes can transcend language and cultural barriers. The milestone marks a significant step for Malaysia’s film industry in penetrating regional markets.

Strong Regional Box Office Performance

The film, produced by Monsta in collaboration with Astro Shaw, has already performed strongly in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. Total box office collections across these markets have surpassed RM69 million, or approximately SGD 5,520,000.

This sustained regional support reflects growing appetite for homegrown Southeast Asian animation that competes with global titles.

Global Expansion Strategy

Directed by Nizam Razak, the film is set for release in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates in late April 2026. Additional launches are planned for South Korea and Türkiye in May, followed by Vietnam and India in June.

The staggered international rollout forms part of a broader strategy to establish Malaysian animation as a global brand.

Localised Voice and Cultural Adaptation

To appeal to diverse audiences, the production team has prepared localized voice acting in English, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish and Vietnamese. Beyond translation, dialogue and humor were adapted to align with cultural nuances in each market.

This approach aims to ensure that international audiences connect with the film’s themes while preserving its original identity.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Animation Profile

The success in Indonesia, one of Southeast Asia’s largest film markets, positions Papa Zola as a flagship example of Malaysia’s creative export potential. Industry observers view the milestone as a boost to regional collaboration in animation and digital content.

With upcoming releases across the Middle East and East Asia, the film is expected to maintain momentum and further enhance Malaysia’s presence in the international animation industry.

Papa Zola The Movie demonstrates how Southeast Asian creative industries are increasingly crossing borders and competing on global platforms. As Malaysia and neighboring Singapore continue investing in digital content and animation ecosystems, regional collaboration and cultural adaptability may define the next wave of Asian storytelling success.
