Pantai Carita in Darkness for Two Years as Banten Transport Department Reveals Public Lighting Cable Theft
South Tangerang, Kompas.com - The head of the Banten Provincial Department of Transportation, Tri Nurtopo, said that public street lighting (PJU) in the Carita area has been dark for two years due to theft of street lighting cables.
“So we installed 196 lamps on the national roads in Carita, Pandeglang, but within less than two weeks the cables were stolen,” Tri Nurtopo said at the Industrial Training Centre (Balai Latihan Kerja Industri, BLKI) on Tuesday (19 May 2026).
However, about two weeks after installation, the NYY-type cables located on the upper part of the lamp units were reported stolen.
“We have not reinstalled them yet. Going forward, we will involve the Aparat Penegak Hukum (APH) for supervision,” he said.
In addition to Carita, cases of PJU cable theft have also occurred in other parts of Banten, such as Serang City and Tangerang Regency.
From the total need of around 19,000 PJU points on provincial roads, only about 5,000 points are currently installed.
