Pandeglang Regency Government Responds After Fisherman Dies Allegedly Due to Fish Bomb

The Pandeglang Regency Government has spoken out regarding an explosion suspected to have been caused by a fish bomb in Citereup Village, Panimbang District. The incident resulted in the death of a homeowner.

“The incident is currently under investigation by law enforcement authorities. This explosion is suspected to be the result of a fish bomb,” said the Head of the Pandeglang Fisheries Office, Uun Junandar, on Monday (31/8/2026).

Uun emphasised that, based on the Regulations of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the use of explosives in fishing methods is strictly prohibited. Therefore, fishermen are not permitted to use explosives to catch fish.

“Fishing must be conducted according to established regulations, which we frequently socialise through the Minister of Fisheries’ rules. There are specific types of fishing gear permitted, while the use of explosives, poisons, and chemicals is strictly forbidden,” he said.

Uun stressed that fishing methods involving explosives also contravene national laws. He noted that fishermen proven to be using such methods could face criminal charges.

“This is no longer just an administrative sanction; it falls into the realm of criminal law, and the elements of the crime are within the jurisdiction of law enforcement,” he asserted.

According to him, fish bombing also leads to the destruction of marine biota ecosystems. Furthermore, such practices can lead to casualties among fishermen.

“In addition to the damage to marine ecosystems, fish bombing impacts human safety,” he added.

Uun stated that the Pandeglarng Fisheries Office is currently coordinating with the Banten Provincial Fisheries and Marine Affairs Office (DKP Banten) to monitor the use of explosives. This is part of an effort to oversee illegal activities by fishermen.

“Our duty, function, and authority within the Pandeglang Regency focus on empowerment and counselling for fishermen. As for supervision, we are always coordinating with DKPP Banten to ensure oversight,” he concluded.

The explosion occurred in Cisarua Kampung, Citereup Village, on Wednesday (26/8) at approximately 13:15 WIB. The blast is suspected to have originated from a fish bomb.

“I received news from the local neighbourhood association (RT) officials that an explosion, suspected to be from a fish bomb, had occurred,” said the Head of Citereup Village, Oman Suherman, when asked for confirmation on Wednesday (26/8).
