Pancasila Remains a Bulwark of National Unity in the Digital Age
Pancasila is regarded as the main foundation for maintaining national unity amid dynamic social, political, economic, and technological changes. The values within Pancasila are not only historically significant but also relevant as a guide for national life and governance in the contemporary era.
Professor Achmad Tjachja Nugraha of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta stated on Sunday, May 31, that Pancasila is an ideological and moral force capable of preserving national unity amid Indonesia’s diverse society. The potency of Pancasila cannot be understood merely as a symbol or historical commemoration; it must be embodied in social life, education, governance, and national development.
“Pancasila is a moral, social, and national foundation that remains relevant throughout time. Its values serve as a unifying force against various challenges, both internal and external,” he said.
According to Achmad, Indonesia has faced various threats throughout its history, including ideological conflicts, potential disintegration, economic crises, and social polarization fueled by digital information and social media. Despite this, the nation has maintained unity due to the strong value foundation provided by Pancasila as the state ideology.
“I believe that national challenges in the modern era have become more complex due to globalization, technological disruption, the spread of misinformation, intolerance, and declining communal spirit in society. In this context, strengthening Pancasila’s values, especially among the youth, is crucial for maintaining national stability and sustainable nation-building,” he added.
NATIONAL EDUCATION
Achmad, who is also a Counsellor at the Central Board of the Islamic Unity Union (PUI), emphasised that national education should not only focus on intellectual capacity but also on shaping character, integrity, and national responsibility.
“Educational institutions play a strategic role in building civilisation. The integration of knowledge, morality, and national character is key to safeguarding Indonesia’s future,” he stated.
Furthermore, Achmad explained that each principle of Pancasila holds strong relevance to contemporary national life. The principle of Divinity teaches tolerance and respect for religious diversity; the principle of Humanity instils justice and social empathy, while the principle of Unity is the primary tool against threats of national fragmentation.
Meanwhile, the principles of People’s Sovereignty and Social Justice are vital for implementing government governance focused on public interest and equitable development.
“Amid global uncertainty, including food security challenges, social changes, and international economic dynamics, Professor Achmad also highlighted the importance of strengthening national autonomy through the development of the food sector, research, technology, and community empowerment,” he added.
Achmad noted that the potency of Pancasila is essentially the living power of values within the collective consciousness of the Indonesian nation. As long as unity, mutual assistance, tolerance, and justice are upheld in social and state life, Pancasila will continue to be the main pillar of the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
