'Pancasila keeps country united'

JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri led a celebration of the 59th anniversary of the Pancasila on Tuesday, calling on young people to remain true to the principles of the ideology.

Speaking to some 2,000 supporters of her Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Megawati said Pancasila kept the country united.

"Pancasila binds together people from different races and religions in Indonesia," Megawati said.

Pancasila was unveiled on June 1, 1945, by founding president Sukarno during a session of the Indonesian Independence Study Board. -- JP
