Every June begins with an important event related to Indonesia’s national journey. June 1, 1945, is recognised as Pancasila Day, established by the nation’s founding father, President Soekarno.

To this day, Pancasila Day is commemorated by various societal groups. As a historic event, it is essential to remember it for educational purposes. How did Pancasila come into being?

How Did Pancasila Come Into Being?

Pancasila, as the guiding principle of state life, did not emerge haphazardly. It originated from the ideas of key figures. The concept of Pancasila coincided with meetings held by the Badan Penyelidik Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan (BPUPK), or the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence.

At that time, the Japanese-established body chaired by Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat held sessions from May 29 to June 1, 1945. During these intense discussions, prominent figures such as Soekarno, Hatta, and Moh. Yamin presented their ideas on the nation’s philosophical foundation. Soekarno, a leading figure, proposed five foundational principles, which he named Pancasila. His ideas included nationalism, internationalism, democracy, social welfare, and divinity. After lengthy deliberations, the meeting participants approved Soekarno’s proposal. However, the concept did not stop there.

BPUPK was later replaced by the Panitia Persiapan Kemerdekaan Indonesia (PPKI), or the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence, a committee formed without Japanese interference. On August 18, 1945, one day after independence, the PPKI session ratified several decisions, including the state foundation of Pancasila. The ratified Pancasila underwent modifications and adjustments from the original June 1, 1945 proposal. The official Pancasila principles are:

  • Belief in the One and Only God

  • Just and Civilised Humanity

  • The Unity of Indonesia

  • Democracy guided by the wisdom of deliberation among representatives

  • Social Justice for All Indonesian People

Theme for Pancasila Day 2026

The commemoration of Pancasila Day was reinforced through Presidential Decree No. 24 of 2016. The Badan Pembinaan Ideologi Pancasila (BPIP), or Pancasila Ideology Development Body, is the state agency responsible for Pancasila education and guidance. In 2026, BPIP announced the theme ‘Pancasila: Unifier of the Nation, Foundation of World Peace’.

How to Celebrate Pancasila Day

According to BPIP Chief’s Circular Letter No. 2 of 2026 on the guidelines for commemorating Pancasila Day 2026, the government will hold flag ceremonies from national to regional levels. The guidelines detail the ceremony procedures, dress codes, and speeches by the BPIP Chief. Beyond flag ceremonies, the public can participate in various positive activities aimed at remembering the struggles of national heroes and fostering national spirit.
