PAN believes regulations on party leader term limits should be left to political parties
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy General Chairman of the PAN Central Executive Board, Saleh Partaonan Daulay, believes that regulations on the term limits for political party chairmen should be left to each political party internally. According to him, there are many options that can be applied to the regulations on party chair term limits. He also believes that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) does not need to regulate the technical rules within political parties. “It could be one term, two terms, three, and so on. Of course, each has reasons to support each option,” said Saleh in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday. He stated that political parties are political institutions that already have articles of association and bylaws (AD/ART) as guidelines and internal legal basis for their activities. Saleh is concerned that if this matter is regulated again, it will cause public uproar. “If everyone agrees to more than two terms, that’s fine. If there is a limit, that’s good too. The important thing is that it is included in the AD/ART so it can serve as a legal foundation,” he said. In addition, he respects various views and thoughts on the political party system. All those views, according to him, must be based on broad benefits for society. “The KPK should not get involved in this matter. Just focus on prevention and law enforcement. The rest, let other institutions handle it,” he said. Previously, the KPK explained that the proposal regarding the regulation to limit the leadership of political party chairmen to a maximum of two terms was submitted as part of corruption prevention. Moreover, the anti-corruption agency stated that the proposal contained in the study on political party governance conducted by the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate has an academic basis. “One of the findings is in point eight, regarding the limitation of terms for a political party chairman, of course, it also has an academic basis,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the KPK Red and White Building, Jakarta, on Thursday.
