PAM Jaya told to improve services
JAKARTA (JP): Vice Governor of Economy and Development Affairs
Tb. Rais urged city-owned water company PAM Jaya yesterday to
improve its water distribution services.
"PAM Jaya has to be transparent to the public by informing the
public about its actual ability, in which areas they can supply
water and which ones they cannot," Rais said after a ceremony to
install H. Rama Budi as the new production director of the
company.
"Don't let the public expect more from PAM Jaya if technically
the company is not capable of fulfilling all the public's
demands," the vice governor said.
Rais acknowledged that there are still faults with both the
company's administration and its water distribution. "I want the
new director to improve the management of the company," Rais
said.
PAM Jaya is expected to speed up the improvement of its
services, especially since the City Administration raised
artesian well fees for household, commercial and industrial use
by 150 to 250 percent as of April 1.
The new rates are designed to encourage customers to use water
from the company, discouraging further depletion of groundwater.
Rais also instructed the new director to coordinate with other
related institutions, including the City Public Works Office and
state-owned electricity company PLN, in the renovation and
expansion of the firm's pipe network.
PAM Jaya's water distribution currently meets 56 percent of
the city's total demand for drinking water. By the year 2000 the
company is expected to raise its water production to about 63
percent of the total demand in the city.
At yesterday's ceremony Rais also installed H. Eddy Sofyan
Diat as the new chief of Lokasari Amusement Park, Erwin
Simanjuntak as the vice chairman of the Jakarta office of the
Agency for the study of Pancasila and Max Sumaraw as a lecturer
at the City Training Center. (31)
