JAKARTA — PT PAM Jaya (a regional water company) plans to produce environmentally-friendly packaged drinking water using paper-based tetra pak packaging.

The Managing Director of PAM Jaya, Arief Nasrudin, stated that this initiative is being undertaken to reduce plastic waste consumption whilst offering a more environmentally-friendly drinking water alternative.

“We will have packaged water from us, but the packaging will be paper, tetra pak. We won’t use plastic,” said Arief during a media discussion at Jakarta City Hall’s Press Room on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Before being sold to the public, the product will be piloted within the Jakarta Provincial Government environment, particularly for meeting and official activity requirements.

“I plan to provide the Jakarta provincial government with the condition that they can no longer use plastic packaged water, and we want to offer a free trial,” Arief explained.

Arief hopes that the introduction of tetra pak packaged drinking water can be an initial step towards reducing the use of plastic bottles, which have been widely used in various office activities.

“Ideally, every meeting within the government environment will no longer use plastic packaged water,” he said.

In addition, PAM Jaya is undertaking various improvements to its clean water service system in Jakarta, ranging from technology development, service digitalisation, to pipeline network expansion.

This technology is planned to be deployed in the Sudirman–Thamrin area. Residents will subsequently be able to consume water directly without needing to boil it.

“We will have equipment called atmospheric water trapping. So it creates water without needing a water source,” said Arief.

Additionally, PAM Jaya is accelerating customer service digitalisation, including the development of smart water metres that enable automatic water consumption recording through a digital system.

The company is also developing a super-app for customer services that allows residents to report water service disruptions, monitor water consumption, and access various PAM Jaya services via mobile phone.

On the technical side, PAM Jaya has begun using specialised gel technology to seal pipe leaks without needing to dismantle existing pipeline networks. This technology is claimed to be capable of sealing small pipe leaks and lasting up to eight years.

Currently, piped water service coverage in Jakarta is reported to have reached approximately 80 per cent and is targeted to continue increasing over the coming years.
