The Regent of Kepulauan Seribu, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, has apologised to residents for the disruption to the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) facility, which provides access to clean water for communities across the island regency.

“We would like to apologise to residents for the disruption to clean water services over the past few months due to problems with the SWRO,” Fadjar said during a public information session on the Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) and piped drinking water services on Untung Jawa Island on Wednesday.

He said that access to clean water is a basic need for communities and is closely linked to improvements in health and welfare.

According to him, the SWRO facility had suffered damage to a pump component, forcing it to remain out of operation for approximately two and a half months.

“Alhamdulillah, the repairs are now complete. Our SWRO is active and functioning again,” Fadjar said.

The Kepulauan Seribu Regency Government, together with PAM Jaya, is targeting 100 percent coverage of piped drinking water services across the islands.

In addition to ensuring that the community’s clean water needs are met, the expansion of services is also part of efforts to reduce the use of groundwater.

“I urge residents to begin switching fully to piped water in order to preserve the environment where we live,” Fadjar said.

He said that clean water services will become increasingly modern in the future with the introduction of smart water meters. The technology allows water consumption to be recorded digitally and in real time, making it more accurate and transparent.

In addition, water bill payments are now digitally integrated through QRIS and e-commerce applications. Through this system, residents no longer need to make payments in the conventional way.

“At present, residents do not need to bother queuing. Water bill payments have been digitally integrated through QRIS and e-commerce applications, making drinking water services easier, faster and more transparent,” he said.

Meanwhile, an Untung Jawa Island resident, Asroni (52), welcomed the return to operation of the SWRO facility, saying that the availability of clean water greatly helps residents meet their daily needs.

“Alhamdulillah, the water is now active again. We are pleased because we no longer lack clean water and our daily needs can be met more easily,” he said.
