PAM Jaya is continuing the construction of a 1,000-kilometre clean water pipeline network this year. Alongside the project, the utility has apologised to the public because the construction work has the potential to cause traffic congestion on a number of roads.

PAM Jaya President Director Arief Nasrudin said the construction of the pipeline network inevitably requires the use of road shoulders. Therefore, he asked for the public’s understanding regarding the impact during the construction period.

“We also apologise to all road users because it is impossible for us not to use the road shoulders to complete the pipanisation in Jakarta,” Arief said at the Jakarta Water Hero 2026 event at Jakarta City Hall on Friday.

Arief said PAM Jaya is targeting the addition of around 1,000 kilometres of pipeline network this year. With this addition, the total drinking water pipeline network in Jakarta will reach approximately 13,200 kilometres.

He said the project is part of a major effort to meet the target set by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung for all residents to have access to piped water by 2029. “Currently, there are still more than 2,000 kilometres of pipes that we must complete. The Governor’s target is very ambitious, to be finished by 2029,” he said.

According to Arief, PAM Jaya’s service coverage has now reached 82 percent, equivalent to around 8.9 million people. However, there is still a lot of work to be done in the next three years.

In addition to expanding the pipeline network, PAM Jaya is preparing a number of supporting projects to increase raw water supply. One of these is the construction of a new water treatment plant in West Jakarta and the construction of a reservoir in the Angke area as an alternative water source.

Arief said this step was taken because the supply from the Karian-Serpong project does not yet have a definite timeline. Therefore, PAM Jaya is seeking various breakthroughs so that the 100 percent clean water service target can still be achieved on schedule.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is optimistic that the target can be realised. He said that the current clean water service achievement of 82 percent shows that the 100 percent target by 2029 is not impossible. “When I launched the target of 100 percent clean water in Jakarta by 2029, many people did not believe it at the time. Now PAM Jaya’s achievement has reached 82 percent. I am confident that with three more years to go, it can be fulfilled 100 percent,” Pramono said.
