Palu Prison Involves Inmates in Horticulture Cultivation

Palu (ANTARA) - The Class II Prime Palu Correctional Institution (Lapas), Central Sulawesi, has involved 11 inmates in horticultural cultivation and livestock farming activities at the Assimilation and Education Facility (SAE) in Langaleso Village, Sigi Regency.

“This activity is part of the self-reliance development programme in the fields of agriculture and livestock,” said the Head of Palu Prison, Makmur, in Palu on Sunday.

He stated that the management of this productive land involves various food commodities, including water spinach, eggplant, spinach, maize, and chilli, as well as other productive plants such as guava.

In addition to food crops, the inmates are also involved in livestock maintenance, which consists of 12 goats, nine cows, and 50 ducks.

Makmur noted that the utilisation of productive land at the SAE continues to be developed to provide skills to inmates during their rehabilitation period.

“This is also a tangible result of our self-reliance training. We hope that inmates continue to acquire skills that can serve as preparation for when they return to society,” he said.

These activities serve as a form of self-reliance training aimed at increasing the skills and productivity of inmates through agricultural activities.

“Through these self-reliance activities, inmates gain experience in managing crops and maintaining livestock under the guidance of prison officers,” Makmur added.

The management of the SAE is one of the efforts by the Class IIA Palu Prison to develop skill-based training while simultaneously supporting the use of productive land.

“On Monday (24/8), inmates, together with Palu prison officers, harvested 15 kilograms of guava within the SAE area,” he concluded.
