Palu was just shaken by an earthquake with a magnitude of M6.7. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the earthquake has no tsunami potential. “Modelling results show that this earthquake DOES NOT HAVE TSUNAMI POTENTIAL,” BMKG said in an official statement. The earthquake occurred on Tuesday (16/6/2026) at 10:27 WIB. The epicentre was located at 1.03° South Latitude; 120.24° East Longitude, precisely on land 42 km southeast of Palu, Central Sulawesi, at a depth of 10 km. Based on the epicentre location and hypocentre depth, the earthquake is classified as a shallow type due to active fault activity. Analysis results also indicate the earthquake has a downward movement mechanism, or normal fault. BMKG also issued shaking intensity estimates and instrumental observation results, for instance in Palu with an intensity scale of VI-VII MMI. Meanwhile, Sigi recorded an intensity scale of V-VI MMI, and an intensity scale of III MMI in Polewali Mandar, Mamasa, Mamuju, and Pasangkayu. Lastly, an intensity scale of II-III MMI was recorded in Pinrang, Pare-Pare, Pohuwato, Boalemo, North Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo Regency, and North Luwu. BMKG also recorded 9 aftershock activities up to 11:20 WIB. The largest aftershock magnitude reached M5.1. BMKG confirmed it will continue to monitor the development of aftershock activity and the earthquake’s impact. The public is also asked to remain calm and not be influenced by emerging rumours. “The public is urged to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be verified. Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake,” BMKG stated. “Check and ensure your residence is sufficiently earthquake-resistant, or that there is no damage from the earthquake vibrations that endangers the building’s stability before you return inside.”
