Palmerah Market in Disarray: Pramono Highlights Poor Access to Railway Station
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has drawn attention to the persistently chaotic conditions at Palmerah Market, pledging to improve access to the nearby railway station and crack down on public minibuses (angkot) that routinely park illegally in the area.
Pramono made the remarks in response to questions about conditions at Palmerah Market, where angkot vehicles idle haphazardly and street vendors trade in a disorganised manner.
“For Palmerah, we will promptly carry out improvements similar to what we did in Cikini,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (23/2/2026).
According to the governor, one of the principal problems in Palmerah is the poorly organised access to the railway station. He noted that some residents are still forced to climb over railway fences to reach Palmerah Station.
“At Palmerah, people trying to get to the station still have to jump over fences in some cases — exactly like the situation we resolved in Cikini,” he said.
Pramono stated that he has instructed the Jakarta Transportation Agency to coordinate promptly with PT KAI, as station management falls under the railway operator’s authority. He cited the redevelopment of the Cikini area, which included the installation of a pelican crossing to assist pedestrians, as a model.
“We have to work together with KAI. The station belongs to KAI. What we did in Cikini — building a pelican crossing — that resolved the problems there,” he explained.
Pramono confirmed that the same concept would be applied in Palmerah. With better-organised access, the governor expressed confidence that angkot vehicles would no longer park illegally and that street vendors could be arranged in a more orderly fashion.
“For Palmerah, we will do the same. Once that is in place, including arrangements for the vendors, people — especially angkot drivers — will no longer be able to park wherever they please,” he added.
