Paljaya Reveals Ideal Timing for WC Suction in Jakarta, Don't Wait Until It's Clogged

As a regional public company managing domestic wastewater in DKI Jakarta, Paljaya reminds that ideal suctioning of household WCs should be carried out every 1-3 years. This depends on the number of household occupants, the size, and the capacity of the septic tank.

“The more occupants living in a single house, the faster the faecal sludge volume will accumulate. It is advisable to carry out suctioning regularly, and not wait until the household septic tank is clogged or overflows,” said the Director of Technical and Business Affairs of Perumda Paljaya, Rizki Shebubakar, in a written statement on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

Signs That the Septic Tank Is Full

Several signs indicate that the septic tank needs to be suctioned immediately, including slow-draining toilet water, frequent blockages in drainage channels, and leaks appearing around the septic tank.

In addition to causing problems for household wastewater piping, septic tanks that are not regularly suctioned can pose issues for the surrounding environment, as they increase E. coli bacterial contamination, which can lead to diseases such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

If these symptoms appear, it is best to immediately use official WC suction services to prevent wastewater from polluting the environment. This is also in line with the provisions of Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 10 of 2024 on Domestic Wastewater Management, Article 36 paragraph (2), which states that every person managing domestic wastewater through SPALD-S must follow the scheduled faecal sludge service programme.

Dangers of Using Unofficial WC Suction Services

In practice, there are still unofficial WC suction services in Jakarta that dispose of waste haphazardly. This risks polluting rivers and groundwater, and many such services engage in ‘price gouging’ practices with customers.

Rizki added that Paljaya ensures all suction results are transported and processed at the Faecal Sludge Treatment Installations (IPLT) in Pulogebang and Duri Kosambi, with the processed output meeting quality standards.

“So, wastewater or faecal sludge is not only suctioned or transported, but truly processed until it is safe in accordance with Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 11 of 2025 on Wastewater Quality Standards and Wastewater Treatment Technology Standards for Domestic Wastewater. Additionally, the cost of WC suction at Paljaya for households is only Rp150,000 per 1 m³,” said Rizki.
