Palestinian Clerics Warn of Extradition Risk to Israel After Member's Deportation from Indonesia
The Association of Palestinian Ulama has issued a stern warning regarding the potential extradition of one of its members, Sheikh Abdul Karim Raed Miqdad, to Israel. This warning follows his arrest in Indonesia and subsequent urgent deportation to Cyprus. In an official statement, the association stated that the case requires immediate legal and diplomatic action to prevent Sheikh Miqdad from facing grave risks. They confirmed they are monitoring developments with deep concern. The Association of Palestinian Ulama urged the Indonesian government to provide clarification on the legal basis for Sheikh Miqdad’s arrest and deportation. They demanded transparency regarding the charges brought against him and guarantees that he was afforded the right to a fair trial. According to the arrest warrant documents, Indonesian authorities detained Miqdad following a request issued through Interpol. The request was made to apprehend a suspect deemed a flight risk or considered likely to destroy or conceal evidence. In addition to addressing Indonesia, the association urged Cypriot authorities to halt any procedures that could lead to Sheikh Miqdad’s extradition to Israel. They stressed the importance of guaranteeing his right to legal representation and access to communication with his lawyers and family. The association highlighted the principle of non-refoulement in international law, which prohibits the transfer of a person to a place where they risk facing torture or cruel treatment. They asserted that handing Sheikh Miqdad over to Israeli authorities would constitute a clear violation of international law and a serious threat to his safety, calling for his immediate release or safe passage to a country where his rights and dignity can be protected.
