Palestine stresses protection of archaeological sites

Palestinian Tourism and Antiquities Minister Hani Al-Hayek has stressed the importance of national efforts to monitor and protect archaeological and historical sites in Palestine, particularly those directly threatened by the Israeli occupation and Zionist settler terror.

Al-Hayek made the remarks on Saturday (8/8) while inspecting historical and archaeological sites in the towns of Al-Karmel, Yatta, and Beit ’Amra in the Hebron governorate, Palestine.

The inspection covered the archaeological sites of Qasr Al-Karmil, Qisarya, Khirbet Umm Al-Amad, and Khirbet Beit ’Amra, where he assessed the condition and needs of each site.

Al-Hayek also discussed efforts to preserve and develop the sites while making use of the archaeological and historical assets located there.

Al-Hayek explained that Palestine possesses a variety of unique archaeological sites that form an inseparable part of its history and national identity.

He also emphasised his ministry’s commitment to partnering with local authorities and community figures to protect and develop these sites using available resources.

In addition, Al-Hayek stated that his ministry would contribute to their rehabilitation and turn them into visitor-friendly tourist destinations capable of attracting the public and tourists.

Making Palestinian archaeological sites into vibrant tourist destinations can not only boost tourism and stimulate local economic growth, but also help protect and preserve the sites by strengthening the presence of local communities and increasing national attention to their protection, he said.
