Palestine hopes Russia will play a greater role in peace process

Palestinian National Economy Minister Mohammed al-Amour has expressed hope that Russia will play a more significant role in the Middle East peace process, given its status as a key and influential participant on the global stage. “Russia is one of the main and influential participants in the peace process, not only in the Middle East, but also globally. Therefore, we very much hope that its role will be strengthened at this stage,” al-Amour said in an interview with RIA Novosti published on Saturday. The minister expressed confidence that Russia could exert its influence on Israel and help bring about peace in the region. He also praised the political and economic support Russia has provided to the Palestinian people, as well as its efforts in facilitating dialogue among Palestinian factions. Regarding the Peace Council for Gaza, al-Amour noted that the body has yet to show tangible progress since its formation, suggesting that its work and priorities need to be reviewed. He stressed that the Palestinian issue remains the root cause of tensions in the Middle East, requiring a political solution through international mechanisms. Al-Amour emphasised that the Palestinian people must obtain the right to establish their own state. However, he accused Israel of rejecting this approach and disregarding previously reached agreements. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a source of tension and hostility in the region for decades. With the active role of the Soviet Union, the United Nations adopted a resolution in 1947 proposing the establishment of two states, Israel and Palestine, though only Israel was subsequently created. Russia maintains that the crisis can only be resolved through a two-state solution approved by the UN Security Council, namely the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
