The South Sumatra Provincial Health Department reported a significant surge in measles cases throughout 2026. As of 26 May 2026, 809 confirmed measles cases were recorded across various regions in South Sumatra. Palembang recorded the highest number of cases compared to other districts and cities. The data serves as a warning for the public to heighten vigilance, especially for children who have not received complete vaccinations. According to data released by the Disease Prevention and Control Unit (P2P) of South Sumatra’s Health Department, a total of 2,882 suspected measles cases were identified, with 809 confirmed positive via laboratory tests. Meanwhile, three areas in South Sumatra remain free of positive cases: Pagar Alam, East OKU, and South OKU. Head of the P2P Unit, Ira Primadesa Ogatiyah, stated that although the cumulative figures appear high, the monthly trend has started to decline compared to the first quarter (January-March) of 2026. ‘Measles cases have begun to decrease compared to the previous quarter. This is the result of health officials’ hard work and active public participation in immunisation,’ Ira said in a statement on Tuesday (26 May). However, Ira stressed that vigilance must not be lowered. Given measles is highly contagious through droplets, there remains a risk of new outbreaks if immunisation coverage declines. The South Sumatra Health Department continues to urge parents to complete their children’s immunisations at nearby community health centres (Puskesmas) or posyandu. Low supplementary immunisation coverage in some areas is believed to be the primary cause of difficulties in breaking the transmission chain. Early symptoms of measles to watch for include high fever, cough, runny nose, and a red rash starting on the face and behind the ears. The public is advised to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear to prevent serious complications. In Medan city, complete infant immunisation coverage as of April stood at just 7.6%, with Simalungun Regency at 22.77% and Deli Serdang at 31.48%. The North Sumatra Provincial Health Department reported a sharp rise in measles cases across various regions up to April 2026. Jember’s Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) has urged the Health Department to take the measles outbreak seriously after 25 samples tested positive. Ledokombo Community Health Centre and Panti reported the highest number of cases. Measles cases have risen partly due to low immunisation coverage, leaving children vulnerable to infection. Cimahi City Health Department recorded 237 suspected measles cases. MR vaccinations and public health education are being strengthened to prevent transmission among children.
