Palembang City Government to Combine Car Free Day with Kebaya Parade

The Palembang City Government in South Sumatra is set to combine the momentum of Car Free Day with a kebaya fashion parade to commemorate National Kebaya Day 2026. Based on coordination with Perempuan Indonesia Maju (PIM) South Sumatra, the event is scheduled for 19 July 2026, according to Assistant I of the Palembang Regional Secretariat, Sulaiman Amin, on Friday. He stated that the Ampera Bridge, an icon of pride for the people of Palembang, will serve as the location for this national-scale cultural event. The concept merges the event with Car Free Day, with hundreds of participants scheduled to join the parade by walking across the Ampera Bridge wearing kebaya attire. According to him, National Kebaya Day is not merely a parade, but a real depiction of the richness of Indonesian culture. From classic to modern kebaya, Palembang songket, and Javanese embroidery, all appear captivating as part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. This kebaya parade also provides a space of expression for women, not only to look beautiful but also to voice their love for ancestral heritage. Amidst ever-changing times, the kebaya remains elegant, carrying the message that culture is not to be abandoned, but to be celebrated. The Palembang City Government emphasised that the scheme for implementing the activity will be further finalised with relevant parties to ensure it proceeds in an orderly, safe, and mutually supportive manner, given the high public enthusiasm for various agendas to be held in the city centre.
