Palace Urges Half-Masting of National Flag in Tribute to Try Sutrisno
Jakarta — The State Secretariat has called on people throughout the country to fly the national flag at half-mast for three consecutive days beginning 2 to 4 March 2026 as a mark of the highest respect following the death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, General (Retired) Try Sutrisno of the Armed Forces.
The announcement was made via the ministry’s Instagram account (@kemensetneg.ri) on Monday.
“In order to pay the highest tribute to the Sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia General (Retired) Try Sutrisno, who passed away on 2 March 2026 in Jakarta, citizens throughout the country are urged to fly the National Flag at half-mast for three consecutive days from 2 to 4 March 2026,” the statement read.
Additionally, the period from 2 to 4 March 2026 has been declared a National Day of Mourning.
The call was directed to citizens throughout all regions of Indonesia as a mark of respect for the late figure’s service and dedication to the nation and state.
Sutrisno passed away at the Central Military Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Jakarta on Monday morning at approximately 07:00 WIB.
The news of Sutrisno’s death was first announced by his family, and subsequently by the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP). The information was later confirmed by several officials within the State Secretariat and the Presidential Guard Unit (Paspampres).
Sutrisno was buried at Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery (TMP) in Jakarta on Monday afternoon. President Prabowo Subianto served as the Inspector of Ceremony during the military funeral service.
The funeral was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former Vice President Boediono, and several ministers from the Merah Putih Cabinet.
Also present were Vice President Gibran Rakabuming, Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Army Chief of Staff General Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal M. Tonny Harjono, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Djamari Chaniago, all standing near the Presidential podium.
During the ceremony, President Prabowo delivered the persada roll call for the late Sutrisno: “I, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, nation, and Indonesian National Armed Forces, hereby present to Mother Earth, the soul and services of the deceased. Name: Try Sutrisno; Position: Sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the period 1993-1998, Commander of ABRI for the period 1988-1993. Son of Subandi, the late, who passed away in the interests and for the honour of the state and nation on Monday, 2 March 2026, at 06:58 WIB in Jakarta.”
“May the path of service he undertook serve as an example to us all, and may his soul find the best place beside God Almighty. Jakarta, 2 March 2026, President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto,” the persada roll call concluded.
