Palace: Track record the reason Prabowo appointed Destry as BI Governor

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi has said that track record and competence were the main considerations behind President Prabowo Subianto’s decision to nominate Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI).

Prasetyo noted that Destry has long experience in the financial sector and has served two terms as BI’s Senior Deputy Governor.

“Well, certainly her track record, right? Her track record, starting from her undergraduate studies to dedicating herself for decades in the financial sector,” Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, Destry’s experience throughout her career in the financial sector was one of the fundamental reasons considered by the President in determining the BI Governor candidate.

“And she has also twice, two terms, served as Senior Deputy Governor. That is one of the most fundamental reasons, of course, competence,” he said.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto sent a Presidential Letter to the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) to formally nominate Destry Damayanti as Governor of Bank Indonesia, a position she currently holds in an acting capacity.

The Presidential Letter was delivered by State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi to the DPR leadership on Monday (10/8). According to him, Destry is the sole name proposed by the President for the position of BI Governor.

“The name is a single one, just one name, namely Mrs Destry Damayanti. She currently serves as acting governor. Tomorrow the DPR leadership will officially convey this to colleagues,” Prasetyo said after submitting the Presidential Letter at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta.

He said the Presidential Letter regarding the BI Governor nomination was submitted to DPR Speaker Puan Maharani and Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.

Destry is currently serving as acting BI Governor after Perry Warjiyo resigned from the position in July 2026.

Prasetyo previously explained that Destry’s appointment as acting BI Governor was carried out in accordance with the mechanism in Law Number 23 of 1999 concerning Bank Indonesia, as amended several times, most recently through Law Number 4 of 2026 concerning Amendments to Law Number 4 of 2023 concerning the Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector.
