Palace Reveals Prabowo's Reasons for Choosing Destry Damayanti as Sole Candidate for BI Governor
President Prabowo Subianto has chosen Bank Indonesia (BI) Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for the definitive position of BI Governor.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi revealed that Destry’s track record and extensive experience in the financial sector were the primary considerations behind the decision.
Destry is considered to possess the competence required to lead the central bank. One of the fundamental considerations is her decades of experience in the financial field.
“Certainly her track record, right? Her track record, starting from her education… from her undergraduate degree to dedicating herself for decades in the financial sector,” Prasetyo told reporters on the grounds of the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 12 August 2026.
Prasetyo assessed that Destry’s experience is further strengthened by her track record within BI. Destry is known to have served two terms as Senior Deputy Governor of BI before being entrusted with the role of Acting Governor of BI.
“And she has also served two terms as Senior Deputy Governor. That is one of the most fundamental reasons, of course, competence,” he said.
Destry’s name was officially submitted by the government through a Presidential Letter to the House of Representatives (DPR RI). The government put forward only one name to fill the definitive position of BI Governor after Perry Warjiyo resigned.
With the submission of a single name, the process of changing the central bank’s leadership has now entered the deliberation stage in the DPR RI in accordance with the mechanisms stipulated in the prevailing laws and regulations.
Destry herself is currently still serving as Acting Governor of BI. She assumed the position after Perry Warjiyo resigned from his post as BI Governor.
Previously, Prasetyo stated that Perry’s decision to resign was not due to health issues, but rather personal reasons. President Prabowo received Perry’s resignation letter on Sunday, 26 July 2026.
