Palace Response to Video of Saiful Mujani Calling to Topple Prabowo
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya has responded to the statement by Saiful Mujani, founder of the Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) survey institution, who is alleged to have called on the public to topple President Prabowo Subianto.
Teddy claimed he was unaware of the statement.
“Wah, I still have a lot of work. I haven’t seen what he said. Something like that,” Teddy stated at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta, quoted on Thursday, 9 April 2026.
He emphasised that President Prabowo Subianto is currently focused on strategic matters.
“Especially the President, handling big things. Focused on more strategic issues and so on,” he added.
For information, Saiful Mujani, a Professor of Political Science at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah and founder of the SMRC research, political consultancy, and policy institution based on research, has called for toppling the government, which has gone viral on social media. The video has been widely shared on social media.
“Yes, only we can do it, the people. ’98 wouldn’t have happened if the people and friends didn’t come down; the MPR wouldn’t have toppled Suharto,” Mujani said in a clip of the circulating video.
This statement has received many comments, one of which came from Fahri Hamzah, Deputy General Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Wave Party (Gelora), responding to the statement by senior political observer Saiful Mujani who is alleged to have called for toppling President Prabowo Subianto.
He suggested that the public speak in accordance with the concept of constitutional democracy. Moreover, he said, the world is currently in chaos.
Therefore, according to him, unity is needed at this time to maintain constitutionality.
“Our country is like this, the world is in chaos, we need agreement and consensus; we should speak within constitutional forums,” said Fahri Hamzah on Tuesday, 7 April 2026.
In the constitutional system, said Fahri, the President is not the sole holder of power. According to Fahri, there are other branches of power that can also be held accountable as part of the state’s collective responsibility to the people.
“I think, my friends agree on that. Especially if they are activists; we fought so hard to build our democracy. If we allow chaos to return, it will be troublesome. Please introspect as well,” Fahri stated.
