Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has conveyed condolences over the earthquake in Palu, Central Sulawesi. “We request permission to express our sorrow regarding the earthquake in Palu yesterday, which resulted in one fatality and several people currently receiving treatment,” Prasetyo stated in Hambalang, Bogor, on Wednesday (17/6).

Pras explained he has coordinated with Central Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid to ensure the best possible handling for the community. He also urged Palu residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks. “To ensure all handling can be carried out as effectively as possible,” he said.

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook Parigi Moutong Regency on Tuesday (16/6) at around 10:27 WITA. The tremor was also felt in several areas, including Palu City, Sigi Regency, Parigi Moutong, and Poso Regency. BMKG stated the earthquake was caused by the Sausu Fault, a different source from the 2018 disaster when Palu and parts of Central Sulawesi were devastated by an earthquake and liquefaction from the Palu-Koro Fault.

One resident was reported dead in Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi, as a result of this earthquake. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre, said that besides the fatality, ongoing data collection also shows an increase in the number of affected residents and building damage in several areas. “The reported fatality originated from Sigi Regency, which is also the area with the most significant impact,” Abdul Muhari stated in a written release.
