Paku Alam X Appointed Acting Governor of Yogyakarta for One Week as Sultan HB X Undergoes Medical Check-up

Vice Governor of the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) KGPAA Paku Alam X has been officially appointed as the Acting Governor of DIY from 24 June to 1 July 2026. The appointment was made to ensure the wheels of government continue to function normally while Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X takes temporary leave for a medical check-up.

The assignment of Paku Alam X was established through Governor of DIY Decree Number 228 of 2026 and was signed directly by Sultan HB X on 23 June 2026, prior to his leave. Regional Secretary of DIY, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, emphasised that the appointment of an acting official is a common mechanism in government administration when a regional head is temporarily unable to perform their duties.

‘It is very normal and commonplace if the head of an institution is unable to carry out duties for any reason. Whether due to illness, an official visit, or leave, the daily tasks will be covered by the deputy. This is a very procedural and normal process within the government bureaucracy,’ Made stated on Thursday (25/6/2026).

According to Made, the presence of an acting official is necessary to prevent a vacuum of authority in the administration of regional governance. This ensures that all public services, coordination among regional apparatus organisations, and administrative decision-making can continue as usual.

‘This decision is neither a new policy nor a specific political move, but rather the implementation of governance procedures already regulated by legislation,’ she said. ‘Every regional head who is temporarily unable to perform their duties is obliged to appoint an acting official so that government functions continue and there is no vacuum of authority,’ she added.
