Pakistan Urges US and Iran to Show Restraint, Calls for De-escalation Under Islamabad Agreement
The Pakistani government has urged the United States and Iran to immediately de-escalate tensions, adhering to the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Islamabad in June 2026. The appeal was made by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. In the discussion, Ishaq Dar stressed the importance of all parties exercising restraint and prioritising diplomatic channels to maintain regional stability. The statement was released by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs via its official account on platform X on Sunday, 12 July 2026. The ministry stated that Dar emphasised the need for the parties to follow the path of de-escalation and show restraint, as agreed in the Islamabad MoU. Pakistan further reiterated its commitment to supporting peaceful conflict resolution, viewing de-escalation as a crucial step to prevent the spread of tensions that could affect regional stability. The government also stressed that all parties must honour the commitments made in the Islamabad MoU as a foundation for maintaining a conducive situation. Beyond calling for de-escalation, Ishaq Dar affirmed Pakistan’s readiness to continue contributing to regional peace. The communication between the two foreign ministers forms part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts amid heightened international attention on US-Iran relations. Pakistan hopes all parties will continue to prioritise dialogue, refrain from actions that could worsen the situation, and adhere to the agreement reached through the Islamabad MoU in June 2026.
