Pakistan Requests US to Involve Vice President JD Vance in Dialogue with Iran
Washington (ANTARA) - Pakistan has requested that the US government involve Vice President JD Vance in talks with Iran, according to a report in The New York Times on Friday (10/4). The request stems from Vance’s initial stance opposing US-Israel operations against Iran, which is seen as making him more acceptable in negotiations, according to sources familiar with the matter. Pakistan reportedly asked the US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff to include Vance in the negotiation team. President Donald Trump subsequently instructed Vance to lead the delegation, per the report. In addition to Vance, the US delegation will include Witkoff and another special envoy, Jared Kushner. These talks could represent the highest-level meeting between US and Iranian representatives since 1979. Experts predict the negotiations will be difficult, given the current fragile ceasefire and the undefined parameters of any agreement. Previously, Trump announced agreement on a two-week ceasefire with Iran, which also encompasses reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran subsequently stated it would initiate talks with the US in Islamabad, Pakistan. However, tensions remain high following Israel’s attacks in Lebanon, which were not covered by the agreement.
