Pakistan PM: US and Iran Sign MoU, Agreement Takes Immediate Effect

Islamabad (ANTARA) - Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States (US) and Iran had been signed electronically by the leaders of both countries and had taken immediate effect. In a post on social media platform X, Sharif said the MoU was signed by the Presidents of the US and Iran and approved by him in his role as mediator. The Islamabad MoU stipulates that Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the US will lift its naval blockade as an initial step following the implementation of the agreement. “The signing of this agreement at the highest level of each government demonstrates the commitment of both parties to resolving the conflict diplomatically,” Sharif said. With the support of Qatar as co-mediator, Pakistan will host an official ceremony in Switzerland on Friday (19/6) to mark the agreement and commence technical-level talks between the two parties. Sharif also acknowledged the constructive engagement of Qatar’s leadership and praised the contributions of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt in facilitating the agreement. He expressed his hope that the MoU would serve as “a solid foundation for better understanding, mutual respect, and shared prosperity for the entire region.”
