Pakistan PM Departs for Switzerland to Join Continued US-Iran Talks

Pakistan remains a mediator in the ongoing talks between Iran and the United States. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir have departed for Burgenstock, Switzerland, to participate in the high-level discussions. In a statement posted on X, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Qatar is also expected to join the talks. “Pakistan will continue to support and advance the implementation of the understandings reached between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States,” the statement added. US Vice President JD Vance had already left for Switzerland to hold talks with Iran on implementing an agreement to end the war in the Middle East. He told reporters that negotiators would discuss the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme and the Lebanon ceasefire. “Hopefully we will make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things I think we have to focus on,” Vance said before departing from Joint Base Andrews in the US. Iran’s negotiating team has also departed for Switzerland. They will discuss the implementation of its agreement with the US to halt the war in the Middle East. The official IRNA news agency reported the delegation’s departure, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stating they would “follow up and demand the implementation of the other party’s commitments” under the agreement.
