Packed train derails in Tegal

The Kertayaya economy train, packed with up to 1,200 passengers, derailed on Sunday in Margadana subdistrict, Tegal, Central Java at around 9:30 p.m. after the rear axle of the second car broke.

The train was heading to Surabaya from Jakarta when the accident took place just five kilometers before it reached Tegal station. No comment was available from state railway company PT KAI about disruptions resulting from the accident, as mechanics were being sent to fix the train. Some passengers decided to switch to buses. -- JP
