Pacitan people to raise funds

JAKARTA (JP): An organization of people hailing from Pacitan, East Java, are organizing fund raising program aimed at helping develop the least developed villages in Pacitan region.

Soejono, the chairman of the organization, called the Pacitan Big Family, said on Thursday that the committee would ask all the Pacitan people living in Jakarta to contribute Rp 1,000 per month towards the program, Antara reported.

Soejono said the Pacitan community in the capital had welcomed the program and enthusiastically fully supported it.

He expressed a hope that the idea would really serve its purpose; namely, to help people still living below the poverty line in 65 of the least developed villages in Pacitan.

Soejono estimated that Rp 120 million could be collected annually from approximately 10 million Pacitan people residing in Jakarta.

He was optimistic that the target could be achieved, citing the success of the organization in raising Rp 300 million last year to finance the construction of a dormitory in Pacitan.

A number of noted public figures hail from Pacitan, including Minister of Population/Chairman of the National Family Planning Board Haryono Suyono; former minister of women's roles, Mrs Sulasikin Murpratomo; and Maj. Gen. (ret.) Soeweno, husband of Minister of Social Services Inten Soeweno. (bas)
