P2MI Ministry Strengthens Migrant Worker Protection Through Inter-Ministerial Collaboration

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) is strengthening protections for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) from before their departure until their return to the country through cross-ministerial collaboration.

P2MI Minister Mukhtarudin stated in Jakarta on Thursday that the cooperation was established with the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) as a follow-up to the President’s directive to enhance inter-ministerial synergy.

“The protection of migrant workers is from upstream to downstream. This is the mandate of the President that we must implement in our programmes,” said Mukhtarudin.

He explained that the protection covers the stages before migrant workers depart, while they are working abroad, and after they return to Indonesia.

“To carry out this upstream-to-downstream protection, it is impossible for the P2MI Ministry to do it alone. Therefore, we are cooperating with the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of PPPA,” he stated.

He said the collaboration is expected to strengthen the prevention of the criminal act of human trafficking (TPPO), improve legal protection for migrant workers, and enhance protection for women and children as vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of PPPA will integrate modules on the prevention and handling of sexual violence crimes (TPKS) into Legal Aid Post (Posbakum) training so that officials and the public have a better understanding of the protection of women and children.

Mukhtarudin expressed hope that the inter-ministerial synergy would strengthen the overall migrant worker protection system while expanding public access to legal protection services and the prevention of criminal acts related to migrant workers.
