Oxygen Is Slowly Disappearing, and Most People Haven't Noticed
The dissolved oxygen in Earth’s oceans, rivers, and lakes is disappearing at an alarming rate. Scientists warn that this not only proves fatal for aquatic life but could also destabilise the balance of our entire planetary system, with recovery potentially taking longer than a human lifetime. The findings were reviewed in a study published in the journal Limnology and Oceanography and reported by Gizmodo, alongside researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. The decline in aquatic oxygen levels, known as deoxygenation, is driven by three main factors linked to human activity. Firstly, global warming heats the water, reducing its capacity to hold oxygen; for every 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature, the oxygen storage capacity of water drops by roughly 2%. Secondly, nutrient pollution from agricultural fertilisers and household waste flows into waterways, triggering excessive algae growth that consumes vast amounts of oxygen as it decomposes. Thirdly, changes in water currents caused by a layer of warm surface water prevent oxygen from the atmosphere from mixing down to the ocean depths. Lead researcher Erica Ferrer explained that this crisis does not exist in isolation. ‘The health and stability of the Earth are highly dependent on aquatic ecosystems. If oxygen decreases, we disrupt natural cycles that regulate climate, biodiversity, and even food availability for humans,’ she said. In the study, the scientists propose that aquatic oxygen levels should be added to the list of planetary boundaries, the critical thresholds that must not be crossed to keep Earth habitable. The current decline in oxygen is already interacting with other threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, and biodiversity loss. If left unchecked, these changes could persist for centuries, even if greenhouse gas emissions were halted entirely. The loss of oxygen does not only kill fish, crabs, and other marine animals. It also disrupts the carbon and nitrogen cycles that help cool the planet, thereby accelerating warming. Oxygen-depleted waters tend to release greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide. Even air-breathing marine mammals suffer as their prey dies off or migrates. The researchers stress that the oceans will not run out of oxygen entirely in the near future, but the trajectory is heading into a dangerous zone, and reversing it would take far longer than the time available to act.
