Overpasses and cheap cars

We have yet to see the national cars to be produced by Tommy
Soeharto's company, and yet Liem Sioe Liong's Suzuki, through
Subronto Laras, shocked us with the announcement that it would be
producing low-cost cars at Rp 20 million (US$8,888).

There's no denying that it is good news for average people who
may now have the opportunity to buy cars. However, for us with
very limited budgets which barely meet our daily needs, the sale
of cheap cars will not be of any benefit. We are happy enough to
be able to ride on city buses that are always ready to serve us
and which have a relatively cheap fare.

Our concern is that the sale of cheap cars will only worsen
congestion in Jakarta and other big cities. The government should
think of building new overpasses, such as in Pamulang to avoid
bad traffic in Ciputat.

There are many other places that would benefit from
overpasses, such as Gajah Mada, Hayam Wuruk, Jatinegara, Kramat
and Sawah Besar areas. We look forward to Jakarta having the
overpasses, which will also make the capital city more beautiful
like Los Angeles.
