Over 40,000 Affected by Floods After Levee Breach in Myanmar

More than 40,000 people were affected by floods from 30 July to 7 August after the Ngawun River levee breached in the Ayeyarwady region of Myanmar, a spokesperson for the president’s office said, citing the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. The levee breach occurred in Laymyethna, Ayeyarwady, on 30 July after sand boils and land subsidence were discovered. To assist the flood victims, temporary relief camps have been opened. As of Friday evening local time, flood levels in some urban wards have gradually receded, while approximately 35 per cent of communication services have been restored. Food aid continues to be distributed to the affected communities, with more than 146 million Myanmar kyat donated towards relief efforts.
