Over 4,000 Afghan refugees return home in a single day

Kabul (ANTARA) - More than 4,000 Afghan refugees returned to their homeland on Sunday (12/7), as the flow of Afghan nationals returning from neighbouring countries continues to increase amid pressure on foreigners without official documents to leave the countries hosting them.

This was reported by Bakhtar News Agency, the official news agency of the Afghan government, on Monday (13/7).

“Some 790 Afghan refugee families, comprising 4,100 individuals, returned to Afghanistan yesterday,” the official media reported.

Of that number, 772 families have been transferred to their provinces of origin after receiving necessary assistance at crossing points. Meanwhile, another 18 families will also soon be transferred to their respective home provinces, according to Bakhtar’s report.

Most of the refugees returned from Pakistan.

Pakistan and Iran, the two neighbouring countries that have hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades, have asked foreign nationals without official documents to leave their territory.

Previously, the deputy spokesman of the Afghan government, Hamdullah Fitrat, reported the return of 76,181 Afghan refugees to the country in the past month, and the repatriation process is still ongoing.

According to Afghan officials, more than 8 million Afghan refugees have returned to their country since the current Afghan government took power in August 2021.
