Over 250 women rescued

TANGERANG: The Tangerang Police rescued on Friday some 259 women locked in a job training center belonging to PT Adi Santa Kencana Mas on Jl. Iskandar Muda 8, Neglasari, Tangerang.

Muji Handoyo, an official of the Directorate of Overseas Manpower Placement and Development at the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, and several officials from the Tangerang Manpower Agency oversaw the rescue of the workers.

The women, who had been promised training and then jobs overseas working as maids in Middle Eastern countries, were taken to Tangerang Police Headquarters in several police vehicles.

Tangerang Police deputy chief Comr. IGD Sugianyar said that the police rescued the job seekers and closed the training center after National Police chief Gen. Dai Bachtiar gave the order.

Handoyo said the workers would be sent home after the police had identified them, saying that their travel expenses would be paid by the ministry.

Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob Nuwa Wea reportedly revoked the permits granted to PT Adisanta Kencana Mas as a company that recruits migrant workers, due to the owner's inability to fulfill necessary obligations. --JP
