Israel and the United States have attacked more than 2,000 targets across Iran since launching a combined military operation in the early hours of Saturday, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing two sources familiar with the operation.

According to the report, the strikes began Saturday morning and involved large-scale air operations.

The Israeli military stated it had fired thousands of munitions and conducted more than 700 sorties over Iranian territory since the onset of the invasion.

Reported targets included senior military and political figures, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as well as commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in addition to air defence systems, ballistic missiles and their launchers, intelligence facilities, and command centres.

An Israeli military official told the newspaper that Israeli and American forces had worked together for months to compile a comprehensive target list, spending thousands of hours gathering intelligence and preparing the operation.

The combined strike launched Saturday reportedly killed several top Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Tehran responded by launching a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, American assets, and a number of countries in the Gulf region.

This escalation followed similar Israeli and American strikes against Iran in June last year, which triggered a 12-day conflict before a ceasefire was announced.
