Over 1,000 workers dismissed

SEMARANG, Central Java: More than 1,000 workers have been dismissed in recent weeks in Central Java due to the tough economic situation currently facing many companies.

"The layoffs occurred because many of the companies where the workers were employed are having difficulty getting capital to expand their venture," Tambah Sudjio, head of the Central Java branch of the All-Indonesian Workers Union (SPSI), said here yesterday.

He said most of the dismissals occurred in Semarang, Karanganyar and Pekalongan.

Tambah urged the government to take steps in anticipating further dismissals in the future. (har)
