An incident occurred in European skies between an Austrian fighter jet and a United States (US) military aircraft.

Reports detail how Austria’s Eurofighter Typhoon was deployed to intercept a US Air Force turboprop PC-12 spy plane that entered its airspace without permission on Monday and Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Michael Bauer, stated that two Austrian Eurofighters were launched on Monday at 12:31 local time to identify an aircraft following an unauthorised flight.

“After the Austrian jets intercepted it, the US military plane reportedly turned around and returned to Munich, Germany,” according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency, cited on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

Bauer also confirmed that this was not the first such occurrence, with the same aircraft spotted on Sunday over Upper Austria, specifically in the Totes Gebirge Mountains.

He added that the incident will be handled through diplomatic channels.

Austria has increased surveillance of its airspace in recent months.

Last month, the Austrian government banned US military aircraft involved in the war against Iran from using Austrian airspace, citing the country’s legal neutrality.

Deputy Chancellor Andreas Babler wrote on social media that Austrians “do not want to be involved in the chaotic politics of (US President Donald) Trump and his wars”.

“Neutrality is a precious asset in our country. No to war,” he emphasised.
