Outcomes of the DPR and Student Meeting During the 19 June Protest
Leaders of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) met with student representatives demonstrating in front of the DPR RI building in Central Jakarta on Friday, 19 June 2026. Student representatives from Trisakti University, Esa Unggul University, Mercu Buana University, and the Islamic Students Association (HMI) met with DPR RI leaders at 18.00 WIB. The meeting, which lasted one and a half hours, produced several points.
Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Sufmi Dasco Ahmad stated that the DPR had held an audience with the student representatives. The Gerindra Party politician said the students’ demands were directly conveyed to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Head of the National Nutrition Agency Nanik S. Deyang via telephone. Dasco said the students’ aspirations had been received by the DPR RI. “God willing, we will continue and follow up on them,” Dasco said on Friday, 19 June 2026.
Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI from the NasDem faction, Saan Mustopa, delivered the points resulting from the meeting, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Chair of DPR Commission III Habiburokhman. They addressed the crowd of protesters from a command vehicle after the meeting.
The following points were conveyed by the DPR RI leadership:
- Release of Students
Saan Mustopa said the suspect status of 16 Trisakti University students from a demonstration commemorating the 27th anniversary of the Trisakti Tragedy in front of Jakarta City Hall last year would be revoked. The DPR also agreed to release two Mercu Buana University students who were arrested before the demonstration began. “Regarding the 16 Trisakti students, whose status is still suspect but have not been processed, the Chair of Commission III has communicated. Within the next week, God willing, the suspect status of those 16 Trisakti students will be revoked,” Saan said in front of the DPR RI Building. The Metro Jaya Regional Police had named 16 Trisakti students as suspects following a demonstration in front of Jakarta City Hall that ended in chaos. They were accused of incitement, affray, assault, and resisting officers. At that time, protesters attempted to force their way into the City Hall complex and attacked internal security officers guarding the gate. Police charged the suspects under several articles of the Criminal Code (KUHP), namely Article 160 on incitement, Article 170 on joint violence, Article 351 on assault, and Articles 212, 216, and 218 on resisting officers. The penalties for these articles range from four months to six years in prison. Meanwhile, two Mercu Buana students were arrested by police before demonstrating in front of the DPR RI yesterday. Both were arrested for carrying petrol before the demonstration. “Why were they detained? Because they were carrying petrol, they were detained. But tonight, as soon as this demo disperses, they will be released immediately!” Saan stated.
- Free Nutritious Meal Programme (MBG) Issues
Saan said student representatives conveyed their aspirations directly to BGN Head Nanik S. Deyang via telephone. According to Saan, from evaluation and screening results, the BGN could save Rp 70 trillion from the free nutritious meal programme budget by cutting ineffective spending. “Later, if friends are still not satisfied and ask again, the DPR will facilitate a direct dialogue,” Saan said.
- Fuel Scarcity and Price Hikes
The DPR leadership also addressed student demands regarding fuel scarcity in West Jakarta and other areas. Saan said Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia had spoken directly with student representatives. Bahlil, Saan said, promised to resolve the issue. “We requested, especially regarding the sudden price increases, because globally there have also been improvements, that the scheme related to price reductions will also be resolved quickly,” Saan said.
- Promise to Facilitate Student Dialogue with the Government
Saan also conveyed that the DPR promised to facilitate direct dialogue between students and the executive branch. Other demands will be communicated and conveyed to the government. The DPR will convey student demands regarding economic stability, political stability, programme evaluations, honorary teachers, and other issues to the government. “There are honorary teachers and so forth, all of that will be conveyed. The issue of enforcing civilian supremacy was also raised, and we will also follow up directly with the relevant parties,” Saan said.
