Otto urges Peradi advocates to provide top-tier legal services

The main message to PBH is, even though you are not paid, you must provide first-class quality legal services to the public. Deputy Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Otto Hasibuan has asked all advocates from the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi), especially those in the Legal Aid Centre (PBH), to provide the best legal services to the public without discrimination. Otto Hasibuan said advocates, particularly those serving in PBH Peradi, are obliged to provide quality legal services, including the provision of free legal aid (pro bono). “The main message to PBH is, even though you are not paid, you must provide first-class quality legal services to the public,” he said while attending the inauguration of Peradi officials in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, on Saturday. According to Otto, legal aid for the public, especially underprivileged groups, must not be given carelessly just because it is free of charge. “Do not, just because you are not paid, provide second-class services. That is not allowed. Even though you are not paid, your reward will be great in heaven later,” he said. Therefore, Otto invited all Peradi advocates in Southeast Sulawesi to carry out their profession professionally in helping the public obtain justice. He also emphasised the importance of competence and integrity as the main capital for an advocate to build public trust. “If you meet those standards, you will definitely become a successful lawyer,” he said. In addition, he reminded young advocates to undergo internships at law firms and have a mentor before opening an independent practice. “I always recommend that all young advocates, before practising and opening their own offices, should intern at a law firm and choose a mentor. That is absolute,” he said. Otto also asked the newly appointed Honour Council and Supervisory Commission of Peradi to carry out their duties objectively, carefully, and responsibly in deciding ethical cases involving advocates. “I earnestly request that duties be carried out seriously and not to be quick to punish people. All factors must be carefully considered before making a decision,” he said. During his visit to Kendari, Otto Hasibuan, who also serves as Chairman of Peradi, inaugurated the management of the Kendari City DPC Peradi for the 2026–2031 period, the Young Lawyers Club, and the PBH Peradi.
