Oso Fires Up 524 Cadres in West Kalimantan: I Don't Want Hanura to Be Disdained
Pontianak, VIVA – The General Chairman of the Hanura Party, Osman Sapta Odang, officially opened the National Technical Guidance (Bimteknas) event for members of the Hanura faction in the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) at the Novotel Gajahmada in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, on Friday, 1 May 2026, in the evening. The opening of the Bimtek was marked by the striking of a gong by the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra.
In his speech, Oso motivated the 525 Hanura legislators to fight for the people’s interests. He stated that advancing a region is not judged by the number of council members it has.
“From this moment, you must be of quality, you must be brave. Brave in upholding justice, brave in establishing honesty, and brave in correcting the course of local government for the prosperity of society,” said Oso in a written statement, quoted on Saturday, 2 May 2026.
Furthermore, the former Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2017-2019 period criticised the phenomenon of legislatures that do not optimally carry out their functions and roles. He noted that there are still council members who are passive and unable to voice public aspirations maximally.
“Many people become DPR members, but many also do not contribute. Even, they are unable to draw inspiration from their conscience,” said Oso.
Oso explained that this condition is the reason Hanura is changing direction by adopting a new tagline that emphasises commitment to the regions. He asserted that every council member has a direct responsibility to their respective electoral districts.
“Only you can defend your region. It is impossible for other regions to defend our region. Therefore, those who are elected must fight for regional interests,” he emphasised.
According to Oso, commitment to the regions must be realised through concrete efforts in promoting development and public welfare. This includes economic improvement, job creation, and strengthening regional self-reliance.
“Commitment means how you provide prosperity, life, and job opportunities for the people in the region,” he said.
He also reminded that the position as a council member should not be used for personal interests. “It is not you enjoying life as a DPRD member, while the people do not feel the benefits,” he said.
Oso added that he does not want the Hanura Party to be looked down upon because of suboptimal performance by its legislative cadres. Therefore, the former Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) of the Republic of Indonesia asked all Hanura faction members to fight for the people’s interests.
