Orphans to get scholarships

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: A total of 270 children whose parents died
when the KMP Gurita drowned last month off Aceh waters will
receive scholarships set up by some community leaders, Antara
reported on Tuesday.

The Acehnese community in Jakarta has stated readiness to help
high-achieving students among the orphans complete their
education either here or abroad, according to a spokesman of the
Aceh administration.

Included in the group of benefactors was A.R. Ramli, a native
of Aceh who is also a former ambassador to the United States as
well as former director of the state-owned oil company Pertamina.

Ramli announced the plan when he visited the relatives of the
disaster's 338 victims on Weh Island and met with Aceh Governor
Syamsuddin Mahmud last week. (swe)
