Orphans, the elderly get donations

TANGERANG: A total of 830 orphans and elderly people received charity packages from the Muslim Family Harmony organization during a breaking the fast gathering at the Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) housing complex in Tangerang on Saturday evening.

The packages, which cost a total of Rp 98 million (US$11,530), were donated to residents of the villages of Lengkong Wetan, Lengkong Gudang Barat, Lengkong Gudang Timur, Buaran, Perigi, Kampung Baru, Lengkong Karya and Jelupang.

The Muslim Family Harmony organization is also holding Islamic classes for children during Ramadhan. It will also organize the collection of the zakat (rice or money donated by Muslims during Ramadhan).

"We hope we will be able to maintain a good relationship between residents in BSD and the villagers," said organization chairman Wido. -- JP

Woman allegedly killed by neighbor

BOGOR: A woman was allegedly drowned by her neighbor in a pond in Sodong village, Jasinga district, Bogor regency, early on Sunday.

The victim was identified as Emi, 52, a resident of Bagoang kampong in the village. She was allegedly killed by her neighbor Enah, 30, who is currently being questioned by the Jasinga Police.

Sodong village head Daeng Darma said that Enah told hamlet chief Sumarna that she had a fight with Emi at the pond and that Emi had died.

"The two women fought on Sunday at 3:15 a.m. when we were having our predawn meals. The fight was triggered because their children were involved in a brawl a day earlier," he said at the Indonesian Red Cross Hospital. -- JP

Construction foreman robbed and beaten

JAKARTA: A construction foreman was robbed by six unidentified people on Friday evening on Jl. H. Ismail in Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta.

The robbers assaulted the victim and fled with about Rp 6 million (US$706) in cash.

Endang Yusuf, 53, was carrying the money to pay his workers' salaries. The robbery took place as he was walking to Jl. Johani, where the construction site is located.

The six robbers straggled Endang with a sarong and beat him and kicked him.

The robbers took Rp 5.5 million from a bag Endang was carrying and Rp 420,000 from his wallet.

A passerby reported the robbery to the Kebayoran Lama Police, while several residents brought the victim to the Fatmawati Hospital.

Kebayoran Lama Police detectives chief First Insp. Bambang Adi confirmed the robbery.

"We are looking for the suspects," he said. --JP
