The restoration of drinking water services for the residents of Takengon and surrounding areas is being strengthened through the permanent construction of the Origon Water Supply System (SPAM) in the Lut Tawar District, Central Aceh Regency. The new infrastructure is targeted for completion in December 202teg, with the system’s capacity reaching 120 litres per second.

This construction is being undertaken to replace the existing Origon SPAM in Mendale Village, Kebayakan District, which had a capacity of 50 litres per second and suffered severe damage due to flooding and landslides in late November 2025. The damage temporarily disrupted drinking water services for the community in the Takengon area.

The Indonesian Minister of Public Works, Dody Hanggodo, stated that a permanent solution is being implemented by relocating facilities to a more suitable location and doubling the capacity of the new installation into two units, each with a capacity of 50 litres per second.

“This is indeed the impact of the recent landslide, which hit one of our SPAM units here with a capacity of 1 x 50 litres per second. We are moving it downstream and building 2 x 50 litres per second there,” Dody said in a written statement on Tuesday (22/09/2026).

Dody shared this information during an inspection of the Origon SPAM handling in Central Aceh on Friday (18/09). The two new units will provide a combined capacity of 100 litres per second.

By incorporating the 20 litres per second capacity from the old system, the total drinking water service capacity will eventually reach 120 litres per second to support the needs of the population in the Kebayakan, Lut Tawar, and Bebesen districts.

“Because of the disaster, we are building it even larger: 2 x 50 litres per second and 1 x 20 litres per second from the old SPAM. Therefore, the total is 120 litres per second. God willing, it will still be sufficient for the needs of Takengon residents at this time,” said Dody.

The project is currently in the foundation construction phase, which is targeted for completion in October 2026, followed by the construction of the upper structures. The scope of work includes water treatment installations, supporting buildings, mechanical and electrical systems, raw water transmission pipes, and reservoirs to maintain supply continuity.

To meet the December 2026 completion target, the executing contractor, PT Adhi Karya, has deployed approximately 100 workers. Some of these are local labourers, meaning the construction not only restores basic services but also creates employment opportunities for the local community.

The restoration of drinking water infrastructure in Central Aceh also includes the rehabilitation of the Lut Tawar SPAM, which has a capacity of 20 litres per second. This effort is directed towards supporting the drinking water needs of the Wih Pesam and Bukit districts.

Work on the Lut Tawar SPAM includes repairing channels and raw water intake structures, installing raw water and distribution pumps, installing flow meters, and rehabilitating water treatment plants and reservoirs.

The construction of the Origon SPAM and the rehabilitation of the Lut Tawar SPAM are part of the accelerated post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Central Aceh. The management is aimed not only at restoring interrupted services but also at building a water supply system that is stronger, safer, and capable of meeting future community needs.
