Sustainability is often understood only in terms of environmental issues, energy, or social programmes. In fact, the concept has a much broader scope. Sustainability also includes the organisational context, which is closely related to how companies build work culture, drive innovation, make decisions, and maintain long-term business performance. In the face of increasingly fierce competition, an understanding of Organisational Sustainability has become one of the factors that strengthens a company’s ability to continue adapting and growing.

According to Harvard Business Review (2025), meeting sustainability commitments will require companies to transform their business models and organisational architecture on a scale that even surpasses the transformation triggered by digital technology and artificial intelligence. However, a transformation of this magnitude will not succeed without one fundamental factor: the people who lead it.

In line with this, Deloitte (2026) reports that competitive advantage is no longer driven by technological differentiation, but by the superiority of human resources. Technology, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), can be replicated, but people cannot. In other words, Organisational Sustainability is highly dependent on the quality and superior competence of the human resources who execute it.

According to the Balanced Scorecard Institute (2024), up to 90 percent of organisational strategies are not successfully executed due to leadership failure in implementing strategy effectively. This 90 percent figure indicates that the biggest problem in organisations often occurs because human resources cannot execute properly.

The ability to lead Organisational Sustainability transformation has now become one of the most critical competencies for professionals. This ability demonstrates a person’s thinking capacity, expertise in reading long-term business dynamics, and readiness to make decisions when facing a problem.

Therefore, developing leadership competencies is no longer sufficient by relying solely on practical experience in the workplace. The Master of Management Study Programme at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya (UAJ) exists as a learning space designed to strengthen strategic thinking capacity and sustainable leadership in a systematic and structured manner.

The Head of the Master of Management Study Programme at Unika Atma Jaya, Rm. Thomas Ulun Ismoyo, S.S., M.M., M.Hum., Ph.D., CHRP, explained, “The Master of Management Study Programme at Unika Atma Jaya has achieved ‘Unggul’ accreditation from LAMEMBA and is committed to producing leaders who are capable of managing organisations sustainably.”

“We realise this commitment through a curriculum that integrates sustainability principles into various courses, such as Business Strategy and Sustainability Management, Sustainability Marketing Management, and other flagship courses. Through this learning, students are equipped with relevant competencies to face the challenges and dynamics of the organisational world while contributing to supporting the achievement of sustainable organisations,” he continued.
